Palau de la Musica

The stained glass skylight is meant to represent the Sun.

One of the absolute highlights of our trip to Barcelona was a completely unexpected visit to Palau de la Musica Catalana in the Sant Pere district of Barcelona. The Art Nouveau concert hall was built between 1905 and 1908 and is the only concert hall to be declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The building is owned by the Catalan Choral Society and serves as a tribute to Catalonian culture and history. Being inside the building literally took our collective breath away as we could not stop staring at the beautiful artwork created with stunning mosaics, sculptures, stained glass, and ironwork.

The Palau’s beautiful concert hall is a symbolic forest with a stained glass ceiling and trees carved from stone. There are approximately 500 sculpted roses throughout the venue.

Catalonian shield and partial image of the Cross surround a beautiful chandelier.

The Concert Auditorium is not only exquisite but a music lover’s dream as the acoustics are unbelievable. The Palau holds approximately 405 concerts each year. The most popular being the Christmas concert which is held annually on December 26—yes, the day after Christmas.

Our wonderful tour guide and a view of the stage behind him.

One would have to visit multiple times to see and fully realize the beauty. There are famous musicians’ names on mosaics, hundreds of sculpted roses, and a beautiful pipe organ. For more information about the Palau, please visit www.palaumusica.cat.

If you ever get the chance to visit this concert hall, please go as pictures do not do it justice.

**The venue is wheelchair accessible as it has an elevator and a removable wheelchair ramp
