Let’s face it, quarantine has disrupted our sleep schedules. Although, I still get up and go to work every day, I get to bed later and later trying to keep up with my children. They have not had a routine sleep schedule since the schools closed in March 2020. I have since decided to home-school and their schedule has only gotten worse! However, I decided this week to return them to a normal schedule for my own sanity.
Sleep is the easiest thing that we can do for our health. It is necessary for brain function and development. According to the National Sleep Foundation, school-age children, ages 6-13, need 9-11 hours of sleep each day. Preschool children, ages 3-5, need 10-13 hours of sleep daily. The sleep can be acquired both at night and during the day with naps. It is also important to develop a sleep routine and adhere to it each day–even on weekends. Since many of us are homeschooling these days and not having to create a routine around a standard school schedule, now is the perfect time to introduce a sleep schedule that accommodates your child’s growing body.
